Moving Insurance and why it's important
The moving companies that you will receive quotes from all have Valuation Coverage, and are both registered with the Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
What is valuation?
In the context of moving services, refers to the level of liability that a moving company is willing to assume in the event that your belongings are damaged or lost during a move. It represents the extent to which the moving company will be responsible for compensating you for any losses or damages that occur while your items are in their custody. It’s important to note that valuation coverage is not the same as traditional insurance.
Moving companies typically offer different levels of valuation coverage, and each level determines the amount the movers will reimburse you if your possessions are lost or damaged during the moving process. However, it’s essential to understand that all valuation coverage options provide limited coverage, and they are not a substitute for comprehensive insurance.
What's not included in valuation coverage is equally significant
Items Not Packed by the Movers
Valuation coverage typically excludes items that were not packed by the moving company. Unless a box shows significant external damage, the contents inside the box are unlikely to be covered for damage.
Natural Disasters
Valuation coverage does not protect against losses or damages caused by natural disasters such as fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, windstorms, hail, and other similar events
Damage in Uncontrolled Storage
If your belongings are damaged while in storage facilities that are not under the control or responsibility of the moving company, they are generally not covered under valuation coverage.
